Musette and Gigue

By Dulcie Holland

Regular price $25.00 Sale

For saxophone and piano, c.5'00.  Grade 5

Musette & Gigue is a short work written for well known saxophonist Clive Amadio. Amadio performed and broadcast this piece on ABC radio and the BBC. He also performed it in many festivals and music clubs

The fact that Clive Amadio performed the Musette & Gigue so many times and even included it in the two pieces he recorded for UNESCO indicates that it was well-received during his lifetime and that he deemed it worthy of preservation. It is hoped that this new, typeset, published edition of Musette & Gigue will revive this little gem.

Nostalgia CD

By Jeanell Carrigan

Regular price $25.00 Sale

Jeanell Carrigan (piano)

Alfred Hill, the Australian composer is reputed to have said “To me there are only two kinds of music - good or bad. All old music has at one time been modern and all modern music will one day become old so why worry? Time is a great critic that puts them in their place”.
The piano compositions on this recording have been deliberately chosen because of their beauty, their inherent musicality, the craft and skill of the composers and their appeal to the listener. Not considered in their selection was any decision based on whether the style was the fashion at the time of their composition. All of the composers on this recording are Australian women who were born between 1862 and 1915.
To support this recording, Dr Jeanell Carrigan has researched and compiled three volumes of scores of these and additional piano works, most of which have not previously been published.  These volumes, together with individual CDs, are available online.

Shy One

By Dulcie Holland

Regular price $25.00 Sale

For saxophone and piano, c.3'00.  Grade 4

Shy One is a short work written for well known saxophonist Clive Amadio. Amadio first performed and broadcast this piece on ABC radio.

The form of Shy One, as originally notated by Holland, is somewhat tricky to decipher due to the use of some shorthand notation. It is hoped that this new, typeset, published edition of Shy One will help to clarify the form and revive this little gem.

Sonata for Cello and Piano

By Dulcie Holland

Regular price $50.00 Sale

Cello and piano, c.16'00

The sonata is in three movements. Allegro begins with a dramatic piano broken chord while the cellist introduces the theme which is built on a strong rhythmical motive. The piano echoes this theme in octaves. This movement is antiphonal with both instruments alternating between introducing the thematic material and then supplying the answer.

The second movement marked Lento sounds like a plea for help created by repeated two note slurs over a semitone played firstly by the cello and then the piano.

The jolly and light-hearted third movement (Allegro) opens with a cheeky sequence played by the piano which, this time, is echoed by the cello. The character of this movement reflects Holland’s cheery and welcoming manner.

The sonata is technically challenging for both instruments and is a good example of a work for a duo rather than some of Holland’s other works which favour the instrument while the piano is given merely an accompaniment rather than an equal part to play.

Composed 1993

The volume includes a CD performed Minah Choe (cello) and Jeanell Carrigan (piano).  Recorded on In Tribute (Wirr 105) available online

    Sonata for Violin and Piano

    By Dulcie Holland

    Regular price $50.00 Sale

    Violin and piano, c.15'00

The sonata is in three movements. The first movement opens with a fanfare-type flourish played by the violin over a dominant pedal in the piano. The Edvard Grieg Sonata for Violin and Piano op. 13 in G major opens in a similar fashion and it is not known whether this sonata was a source of inspiration for Holland. The structure is not a straightforward sonata-allegro form instead it is built on several themes which reappear, closing with a coda.

The second movement is slow and in the style of a fantasy – free form. The third movement contains a jolly opening theme followed by a slower middle section. The opening theme returns to place the movement into a quasi-ternary form. It is a challenging work for both instruments and definitely an example of a duo work, both instruments playing an equal part.

    Sonatina for Viola and Piano

    By Dulcie Holland

    Regular price $50.00 Sale

    Viola and piano

The Sonatina is in three movements. The first is in a fairly traditional sonata form in the key of F major. The second is marked Andante and in the relative minor key, d minor, while the third begins in a very dance-like fashion. This opening is followed by a lyrical, flowing middle section and the ‘A’ section returns finishing on an A major chord. Bowing written into the score by Holland has been retained and Rosemary Curtin has generously contributed additional bowing after an intense perusal of the score.
    Composed 1932

    Hardcopy score includes CD.

    Trio (1944)

    By Dulcie Holland

    Regular price $120.00 Sale

For violin, violoncello and piano, c.15'00

The trio is in three movements opening with a very sombre and dark first movement, containing echoes of the Englishness of John Ireland, a sprightly scherzo, with a rapturous central theme, for a second movement and a lively third movement. There is a wonderful dialogue created between all three instruments in all the movements.
The work is not technically challenging but containing musical depth and a wide palette of various colour possibilities. Composed 1932
