The opening higher pitched flourish is almost immediately answered by a markedly contrasting and deeper voice. The juxtaposition of these divergent sonorities, the unfolding of germinally related thematic motives and the changing effects in the slightly “jazzical” tonality represent the interjections of the playful ghost. The contrasting higher and deeper sonorities of this piece which reflect this imagery should be played with gaiety as well as an artistic sensitivity. The damper pedal should be used to sustain some of the bass sounds, but care should be taken not to blur the changing chordal tonalities scattered throughout this humorous piece.

Manly Beach Rompango, The

The opening chordal flourishes reflect the startlingly magnificent seascape. Thereafter, a few descending sequences which are slightly dissonant and ornate, reflect on a “tonal” portrayal of the stepping down to the beach. Snippets of tango rhythms and the Brazilian samba are thrown into the summery ‘romp’ rhythms and movement of shifting sands beneath the gentle waves on this beautiful Sydney beach. Hence, the word “rompango” which sums up the essence of the lighthearted and very lyrical jazz-like prelude.

A lively young nineteen year-old waitress on a cruise ship loads an excessive number of glasses on her tray and tries hard to hold the tray in a steady position while the boat rocks and rolls gently. She moves rhythmically to the music in the cocktail bar, dressed in a short red dress, fancy high heeled boots and a scarlet cap.
A select few young men are trying out dance moves and the young waitress becomes distracted. She yearns to join this high-energy group in their fun. But this is her first job, so she decides, rather ruefully, not to join in the fun and risk getting fired.

The constrictions on a teenage girl’s romantic sensibilities make her somewhat frazzled and irritable during the Covid-19 lockdown - but then she decides to deal with the deprivation with wisdom and prudence, striving to be sensible under the imposed circumstances. She raids her family library and does what is practical and somewhat functional, in choosing to settle down to Jane Austen’s famous book “Sense and Sensibility”.
The quirky and nonchalant music - fragmented melodies logically bound together but seemingly somewhat in limbo, captures her mood and pleases her sensibilities.

Skittish in Lockdown

This piece captures the slight impatience of an adolescent in lockdown. It expresses an inwardly energetic “shout”, a simultaneous feeling of joy and annoyance, and a breaking into a dance-like trot to release the excess energy that has been building up in the young person.
The lilting jazz rhythms of the marimba and piano reflect the joy of missing school, and the strictly assertive and sparse drum-beat is reflective of a slightly annoyance at the limited scope of movement.

Surreptitiously Astute Stoat and the Cat, The

This is a reflection on an encounter between a lively stoat and a smugly lethargic house cat. The music captures the stoat’s irregular and rapid movements as it moves swiftly and nimbly, manoeuvring strategically to disrupt the cat’s tranquillity. The stoat’s anxiously jerky movements captured in the opening bars, contrast with the smoother and richer texture of the pseudo romantic middle section that portrays the cat’s ability to remain unperturbed in the face of the stoat’s antics.
If adhering to a faster tempo, the piece is suitable for an advanced pianist, as it requires a swift movement and a lightness and clarity of tone in the left hand chords in the opening bars. But, as the piece progresses there is plenty of opportunity for an interpretive rubato.
Taken at a slower tempo it will be suitable for intermediate players as well.

Toccatina Avventura

This piece is inspired by the steep steps ascending to the domed Sydney Opera House. The sharpness, the geometrical formations of the steps, the pleasing asymmetry of the architectural masterpiece to which they grant access, are reflected in the repetitive chords, notes and leaps; and the more undulating phrases that are interspersed among the lush chordal runs, reflect the curves of the dome formations, the sea gulls, the sea breeze and the towering ocean-liners that dock at Circular Quay.However, there is an underlying restraint in this piece, a persistent and formidable pulling down of the repetitive notes to a lower register, that adds yet another dimension to the mood and structural balance in this piece.
The harmonies are sparsely spaced, at moments with even a little hint of modality; just a few phrases breaking into a romantic sentimentality or accented, humorous little motives.
