Finding your musical voice

This is a resource book for the student, the classroom teacher and the private studio teacher with suggestions to inspire creativity and music composition. I believe everyone is capable of writing music. Nick Cave when describing his song writing process stated, “The big problem with song-writing for me is starting a new song. It's the thing where all the anguish exists, not in the writing of the song, but the starting of the new song.” 

A range of exercises is included so that students can explore the possibilities of sound in terms of: pitch, duration, texture, register, tone colour, and expressive techniques. 

For ease of use 
•   Most examples and exercises are in simple keys and all exercises can be transposed to suitable keys
•   Examples in treble and bass clefs are included, this will enable all students to read and connect with the information presented
•   The words triad and chord are used interchangeably to describe three or more notes played together.

A resource book for practicing chords, fillers and improvisation using chord charts.  It is a wonderful thing to be able to sit at the piano and make music. Improvising is like writing a letter or short story. Everyone can improvise, so encourage students not to be afraid to try and focus on enjoying the process rather than the product. Improvising is not about finding the next Bach, Mozart or Oscar Peterson, it is about freedom to make music. Remind students that simple is great and their ideas have merit. 

Making My Own Music provides a simple step-by-step process with suggested activities for the teacher and student to use to develop improvisation skills. The material can be used in the sequence given, or as the teacher and student choose. The exercises and repertoire in the book have been used very successfully with students of all ages from the very young to adult. For younger students with small hands make adaptations to the given ideas, for example: use two note chords instead of three.

The preface outlines the many ways the examples may be used and re-used as new skills are acquired. The unexpected of adding improvisation to each lesson and weekly practice at home significantly increases student motivation to play each day. Once students are at the piano, improvising and creating, it seems the scales, studies and pieces are practiced as well.

Ideally used as an extension or addition to Making My Own Music - the Art of Keyboard Improvisation Made Easy, these pieces in Making My Own Music, Anthology students start from different positions, skill sets and interest and so the pieces can be used in any order suitable. Feel free to simplify chord progressions if needed, and or to add 7th chords, substitute chords and such to those given. Mix and match and vary the order of using the repertoire of this  book in the best way to develop student improvisation skills. You can also give students just the chord progressions without the tunes, so they may experiment with improvisation of melody.  Make sure students try many different ways of adding chords, accompaniment patterns, substitute chords, tempos, fillers and arrangements. Try using just the chord progressions alone without the given tune. Try improvisation with a friend and make the solo into a duet.  Compiled 2014.
