Mythweaver
By Kevin March
Regular price
$45.00
A cycle of six songs for soprano and piano.
The 2009 Dorian Le Galliene Prize commissioned work.
The poetry of Sappho has come to us, down through the centuries, primarily through three means: 1) one complete poem, 2) fragments surviving on papyrus, and 3) citation by other authors in instances where the original has been otherwise lost. We know also of a few other lost works which were mentioned by other writers but not quoted, leaving us with the knowledge of their existence but nothing of their content.
The poetry in this cycle is drawn from citations (Stars Around the Full Moon and Lady Dawn) and fragments (Beautiful Things). Two of the texts (The Moon Has Set, and Sweet Oil) are the result of combining citations with fragmentary texts of similar theme and tone. The brackets indicate places where the text has been lost.
In composing Mythweaver, I wanted to find a way of depicting these lost words, or to put it another way, this voice whose words have been lost. Wanting neither to simply ignore the gaps in the text nor to force upon the singer and listener text that wasn’t Sappho’s, I sought a third option. (Kevin March)

Noche Oscure
By Kevin March
Regular price
$35.00
For soprano, baritone and piano, 6'45
La Noche Oscure (Dark Night) was written in the 16th century by the Carmelite friar San Juan de la Cruz (St. John of the Cross). On its surface, the poem reads like an intense, clandestine, meeting of lovers. Each lover secrets away from their respective homes to come together under the cover of darkness to express their yearning and adoration for one another. Beneath the poem’s romantic veneer however, lies a mystical, metaphorical subtext about a soul’s yearning for the divine.
This setting of Noche Oscure uses three languages: Spanish, French, and English, these three languages and the way they are handled in the piece helps to tell the story of the lovers.

Poem by Alcam
Alcman was a pioneer of Ancient Greek lyric poetry in the 7th century BCE and a predecessor of the renowned lyric poetess Sappho. Legend has it that when “ceryli” (male kingfishers or halcyons) grow old and are no longer able to fly, the females of the species carry them, bearing them upon their wings.

Shadow Songs
By Kevin March
Regular price
$40.00
Three songs for mezzo-soprano and piano, c.7'00
Words by Carl Sandburg
Innocence. Passion. Possession. Revulsion. These are the spices that flavor the love found in Shadow Songs. Chosen from a collection of unpublished poems by American poet Carl Sandburg, the cycle provides three glimpses into
a consuming love affair. Through the use of evocative, sensual imagery the listener is drawn through different phases of the relationship, while the performer, singing about the relationship in the third person, creates a sense of distance, as if singing about someone else.

Two Arias from Echo & Narcissus, c.7'00
Libretto by Jane Montgomery Griffiths
The story of Echo & Narcissus is based on Book III of Ovid’s Metamorphoses. In it, the lovely nymph Echo, having been cursed by the goddess Juno, can no
longer speak of her own volition, but can only communicate by repeating the words of others and the sounds she hears in nature.

Two Pieces for Piano

For solo piano
Toccata Stella Australis. This brisk, quixotic toccata in 3/4 encapsulates the contemplation of a single star coursing through the galaxy, taking stargazing firmly out of the realm of sentimental nocturne and placing it into that of an ecstatic, eccentric scherzo.
Of Lightning Bolts and Chopin. The work is characterized by thick, chaotic, rhapsodic flourishes which dissipate from time to time to unveil faint whispers of Chopin.

Voice of Australia, Volume II (High)
By Miller, Dixon
Regular price
$65.00
High voice and piano.
Songs by 13 Australian composers.
Demonstrating the unique relationship between poet, composer, singer and pianist in the genre of art song
"Ideally, contemporary Australian Art Song speaks to Australians in a language with which they can readily identify. As surely as the creative spirit inspires our poets and composers, an essence of their lives enters into our artistic lexicon and by this we are all enriched. In this resource songs we are sharing with you that have enriched our lives through their music and their poetry.
After the considerable success of Voice of Australia Volume 1,we were emboldened to continue the adventure with a second volume. Once again we offer aids to teachers, singers and pianists in the hope that this will encourage you all to include these songs as part of your repertoire. We hope this spirit of exploration will serve as an inspiration for you to also investigate the huge wealth of Australian Art Song still to be discovered.
Our choices of songs for this book are highly idiosyncratic of course. However our guiding criterion was that all the composers represented had written or are in the process of writing a sizeable output for voice and piano.
We have also attempted to represent a variety of tonal and melodic styles with a range of fast and slow songs. Where possible we have chosen songs with texts by Australian composers, wanting to share aspects of readily recognizable Australian life and thought." Wendy Dixon and David Miller
Some exercises are included based on material found in the songs.
The accompanying CD includes performances of all the songs and rehearsal versions.
