SATB choir unaccompanied, c.2'40This piece is a choral adaptation of Walt Whitman's short poem "When I Heard The Learn'd Astronomer", first published in 1865 in the anthology "Drum-Taps". Whitman's poem expresses distaste for an astronomy lecture, and preference for a personal experience of the night sky. The mood of this composition moves from hymn-like solemnity to discomfort, resolving in quiet and reverent joy.

Imagine a little wooden house behind the dunes, facing the beach, waking to the crash and sloosh of the surf across sand, watching dawn break over the Pacific Ocean. You go for a walk along the beach, a swim. Friends come over, bringing food and drink; there is dancing and celebration on the deck. The party winds down in the evening, friends depart one by one, and then off to sleep with the roar of the surf.

Pneumatophores are specialised roots which mangroves need to thrive in salty mud. In this piece, the Clarinet depicts the mangrove roots, and the Vibraphone represents the rhythmic ebb and flow of saltwater. The Flute, Oboe and Bassoon express the movement of birds, fish, crabs and people as they gather food in their bountiful habitat.

Rakali

Suite for unaccompanied clarinet, c.7'50This suite of six short pieces is a tribute to the life of the Rakali (Hydromys chrysogaster), a native rodent of Australian rivers, wetlands and coastal areas. The rakali resembles an otter, having partially webbed hind feet and water-repellent fur, and is a strong swimmer. The nimble and richly-textured Clarinet in Bb is aptly suited for a depiction of this mammal’s life cycle.
The pieces describe, in turn, a hungry rakali moving stealthily at dusk along the shoreline, searching for shellfish and crabs; a young rakali exploring the reedbeds and tree roots under the watchful eye of its mother; the well-fed rakali family returning to their burrow to sleep; a battle-scarred old rakali basking in the sun while listening to the calls of stonecurlews; a rakali pair playing hide-and-seek (perhaps courting?); and a lone rakali swimming in a creek.

Soldier Crab

Trio for piccolo, oboe, vibraphone, c.1'40This piece depicts a dance between three characters on the sandflats. The soldier crab is represented by the piccolo, a shorebird by the oboe, and the sea by the vibraphone. The soldier crab pops out of the sand and begins to forage. When the shorebird comes too close, the crab spirals down into the sand, but the bird probes the sand with its long bill. The tide rises imperceptibly, filling small pools across the flats and obliterating the tracks of crab and bird.
