Flood, The

Michael Hannan (music and soundscapes) and Janis Balodis (lyrics) with Isabella A Cappella and The Flood Band. 

The Flood is a large-scale community promenade music theatre piece composed by Michael Hannan and developed by Northern Rivers Performing Arts during 2003 in Lismore NSW.  From its collective memory of floods, the creative development team assembled a plan for soundscape of the Lismore floods: natural sounds such as incessant rain, the roar of rushing water, the sound of certain birds associated with impending rain, the calls of frogs and sirens, to name but a few.

Four Quartal Studies

Four Quartal Studies explores the phenomenon of quartal harmony: that is, using chords that are based on stacks of fourths instead of stacks of thirds, as in traditional harmony. Quartal harmony is not a new idea, having been explored to various degrees by composers such as Schoenberg, Bartók and Hindemith, as well as in jazz by artists such as Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock.

Garland Piece

Homage to Chopin

Homage to Chopin is a three-movement work which explores some of the stylistic characteristics of Chopin.    The first movement is influenced by the Berceuse in its decorative right-hand figurations and also to some extent by the harmonic structure of the Nocturne in D flat Op 27 No.2.  Movement II is based on the textural idea of the Prelude Op 28 No. 4: i.e., repeated and gradually chromatically-changing left-hand chords accompanying a single line right hand melody.   Movement III was inspired by my love of Chopin's Mazurkas, and refers particularly to Op. 17 No. 4, Op. 63 No. 2 and Op. 68 No. 4. Homage to Peter

Impromobile

The composer coined the term "impromobile" to combine the idea of the musical mobile (a series of musical fragments that can be played in any order at the discretion of the performer) with the idea of improvisation. In this work the performers are each presented with ten short musical fragments and instructed to play at least eight of them in any order and to extend them all by improvisation. The performers are advised to analyse the work (both primo and secondo parts) in order to assist with the process of improvisation and facilitate ensemble coherence.

Meditation on Nine

There is an underlying static texture in three layers, each of three notes. Within each layer the durations of all the notes are the same, but between each layer they are different.  Thus the notes of each layer phase with each other, their attacks rarely coinciding.  Superimposed on this slowly changing chordal texture are two sporadically-occurring loud chordal gestures each containing nine different notes.  Composed 2014
