At the melting of the snow

The text for this work makes use of a lesser-known, but still beautifully depictive poem by A.B. (Banjo) Paterson of the same name, written in 1902, but not published until 1917. The poem depicts the amazing transformation that occurs during the spring of the Snowy Mountains, where the snow melts to reveal the green grasses and many varied wildflowers. Composed 2018

Auftauchen der Nacht

This linear structure begins with murky material, as the light of dusk can be when Night has not fully fallen. Clearer material and musical layers, including melodic lines in the oboes and clarinets as well as a rhythmically driven bass line in the bassoons, tuba and contrabasses, replace this murkiness gradually. Quartertones appear incorporated into Harmonic Fields as the work progresses. These are placed on top of each other during the middle section with mostly Brass emphasising one while mostly Strings and Woodwinds the other. These accumulate in intensity to a climactic point.

De Rerum Natura is a 6-part song cycle setting portions of Titus Lucretius Carus’ same-titled 6-volume ancient Latin literary work, completed in c. 50-5 BCE. De Rerum Natura can be translated as The Nature of Things, and is a sophisticated didactic text explaining the world around us, consisting of poetry, prose and scientific theory of the antiquity. Lucretius outlines the flaws as he sees them in ancient religion, that the souls of men are mortal and the world made up of infinite fine particles, using a similar text written 200 years previous by ancient Greek philosopher Epicurus (341-270 BCE) as a model. The text is pronounced according to the principles of classical pronunciation, which is how linguists believe that Latin was spoken in ancient Rome.
The six movements of De Rerum Natura, are divided into two related groups of three movements (1, 2, 3 and 4, 5, 6). The first song has a very flowing character while the second is much more rhythmically driven and tense. The fourth song is related to the first harmonically, but with the tense and rhythmically driven character of the second. The fifth song meanwhile is related to the second harmonically, but with the flowing character of the first. The third and sixth songs are also closely related by way of their rhythmically free and semi-improvised character, creating two related yet contrasting overall divisions of the song cycle.

This short piece in three movements is very intense and 'charged'. First movement is very rhythmically strict, the second is unmeasured and free while the third movement sees a gradual return to the rigid and intense material of the first.

Exhibited Symmetry

The work's title is indicative of its various symmetrical pitch patterns. Structurally it focuses on contrasting "time-space" notated sections that have no rhythm, with very rhythmically strict sections. Overall this technique is used to create faster and faster tempi culminating with the fastest of these at the climax. The finale uses this process in reverse. Composed 2010

Baritone and piano c.10'00
The lyrics are taken from extracts of letters from General Sir John Monash written while he was on active duty at Gallipoli. After such intensive fighting his letters home were filled with longing for his former life and in particular his garden. A solemn and introspective song in 'lieder' tradition but includes more modern techniques. Winner of the Gallipoli Songs Prize in 2015.
Composed 2014.
