Christopher Healey

Melbourne-based composer Christopher Healey holds a Bachelor of Music (Composition), Honours (Class I) from the University of Queensland. He has studied with renowned Australian composers Gerard Brophy and Robert Davidson.  From 2018-2019, he also undertook further composition studies with the eminent American composer, Daron Hagen. Christopher has also completed his PhD in Composition.

Christopher Healey's music is eclectic in style, atmospheric and evocative, from the transfixingly tender to the disturbingly macabre.  He weaves fantastical tapestries of enchanting textures, warm lyrical melodies with extended harmonies. His catalogue comprises over 90 diverse works, including instrumental and vocal compositions, choral music, full-bodied orchestral scores, a set of miniatures, and a chamber opera.

He has received commissions from eminent musicians and arts organisations in Australia, China, France, Holland, and the USA, including 4MBS Classic FM, Bendigo Symphony Orchestra, Camerata - Queensland's Chamber Orchestra, Duo Piaggio, the BRON Saxophone Quartet, BoB-Best of Brass, Divisi Chamber Singers, Ensemble Francaix, Ensemble Fabrique, the Flinders Quartet, Luke Severn (Cellist, Conductor, Artistic Director), the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Victorian Brass Band League (Moonee Valley Brass Band), the Nickson Quartet, Omega Ensemble, Rockhampton Symphony Orchestra, and many others.

Christopher has also received prizes including the Alan Lane Award, A.G. Francis Prize, 2nd Place in the Arcadia Winds Composition Competition, 2nd Place in the ANZVS Composition Competition, and the Australian Postgraduate Award.

In 2022, he was selected by the Flinders Quartet as one of three composers chosen from a national call for string quartet works; he was selected by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra as one of four composers from a national call to be commissioned as part of the Cybec program; and he was one of five composers chosen from a national call to be commissioned by Omega Ensemble.
